  • looking for single vox humana pipe

    Greetings all;

    I'm new here and might be posting in the wrong zone--however, that's how I learn my way around I guess. I'm looking for a single pipe for a vox humana rank. I actually have the lower conical pipe section, but all the upper sound generating stuff (block, shallot, reed etc) are missing. Any hints on how to best proceed towards finding a reasonably close sounding replacement? I can easily post photos and dimensions of the neighboring pipes.

    Thanks in advance for any and all help.

      Hi NYC

      It's a Bb , note 35 counting up from the bass C. (called by someone who saw a photo of it " a totally standard low pressure capped Vox Humana ").

      thanks for your interest

        Best way to get it replaced is by an organ builder. First this is almost impossible to do at a distance. There are so many forms of vox humana that you could end up with something that is very different from what is in the rest of the rank. Only specifying note will not help either. You will need to determine the scale from the rest of the rank. This involves measuring those next to it, some distance of it etc.

        Ask a specialist...

          Typically you would send in the adjacent pipes to a pipemaker, who then canduplicate it and may also voice it for you. A builder would know what to measure, so you might be able to avoid sending the pipes away.

            Thanks for all your help in this matter. Before I get in way over my head here, what do you think a job like this might cost? I'm going to pay for this myself--I doubt I can sell the need of a custom-made "duck-call" to the parish community, even though I fully appreciate the need to restore this instrument. I'd hate to embarrass myself by sending the pipes to the pipemaker, only to tell him I can't afford his services. Just a ballpark figure anyone?

              Take a picture of the pipes and send it off to a builder and ask him. Best would be to send a picture of one taken apart as well. With "taken apart" I don't mean to dismantle it to all its parts, but to just remove the boot from the rest so you can take a picture of the reed so he can see the construction. Don't touch the reed and if you are not sure how to proceed, don't do it as damaging it is a real danger.

                I just have a D and a E, I'm guessing from the tenor Octave. Might try the keyboardtrader.com

                  Re: looking for single vox humana pipe

                  Following a hot tip, I contacted an eBay pipe dealer who had just what I needed; well, so far at least it seems that way. I bought the pipe and will get it one of these days, and then we'll see. I'm hoping for the best. The pictures he had of it and it's dimensions looked very close to our pipes in that range. I'll post again when I've had a chance to put it to the test. Thanks for all your interest and help

                    Re: looking for single vox humana pipe

                    The pipe was shipped from Iowa April 10--it arrived in Mass. May 4. Chalk it up to tax returns getting priority over the parcel post system. The truant pipe works fine. The harmonic content is a little different (and brighter), but I really doubt any parishioner is going to call me on it, ever! It's nice to have a complete rank--now all I have to do is fine tune them (for the umpteenth time). All's well that ends well, and I guess I should thank eBay for playing a part in this solution.

                    thanks for all the input and interest--I'm sure to be back with more repair issues in the future.
