  • E.M. Skinner Opus #776

photographed and recorded (very briefly) the E.M. Skinner Opus 776 at Central Presbyterian Church, in Louisville, Kentucky:

    http://www.nycfarmboy.com/emskinner/emskinner.html

Its MOSTLY left untouched or revised back to what it was originally intended except for a louder reed added.

I intend to go back someday and record the various stops on this one one by one to have a historical record of the this historic organ.

Does someone have a link on the original stop list so I can get that posted? It was revised somewhat "baroque" in the 70's but then revised back to "romantic" in the 90's fortunately.

Here is a link to the spec - there is no information as to when it was compiled, so I can't verify if it is the original spec or not.

I notice that this online spec was updated with a correction as recently as 5/18/07, but I don't see what was corrected, and by whom...

That is such a fantastic photoNYCFarmboy - perhaps you might contact the Aeolian-Skinner archives (the link I provided) and submit that photo to them? Itwould show up onthe specification page.

[edit] I just saw the other photos you took - maybe the A-S archives would be interested in those as well...

            Interesting idea!
Would you do it in Hauptwerk format, or something compatible?

Milan Digital Audio in Indianapolis has done a great job with EM Skinner #719 (http://www.aeolian-skinner.110mb.com/).
See here for more info and MP3 demos: http://www.milandigitalaudio.com/skinner.htm.

thanks, yes I guess they have used some of my photos of some other Aeolian Skinner organs (with my permission).

As to recording in Hauptwerk format? what format is that? I'd be really interested in recording so that it could be used, in particular that amazing French Horn on it, as well as the wonderful diapasons on it.

Take the following link to Crumhorn Labs, the makers of haupwerk: http://www.crumhorn-labs.com There you'll find anything you want to know about hauptwerk. The forum there also has a wealth of info. See this link http://www.crumhorn-labs.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=2for more info about recording organs. I hope this begins to answer your question.

I think it would be awesome to have a Haupwerksample set of the Skinner Opus #776.

It is a lovely picture and I hope the instrument sounds well in tis venue. It was so typical for Skinner to split up and bury its instruments.

This seems like a typical spit and bury installation.
