At home, I use a 25 note wireless keyboard for tuning. I can also
change stops, octaves, manuals, and shades without having to go to the
console between every note. It's probably one of the best purchases
I've ever made.
Ohmigosh. I can't believe I never thought of that before. That makes a HUGE amount of sense. Is it something that can work with any organ, or is it something you need to have wired into the organ when it's built?

[quote user="al"] Maybe put batteries and wheels on the console and the organist can drive around the theatre or concert hall. Talk about a "touring organ".

That reminds me of the dance scene in Busby Berkeleys' "Gold Diggers" with the 100 dancing pianos. Films these days lack that kind of class. [:P]

Re: Wireless Console
Infrared requires line-of-sight communication and is therefore not the best choice.
There are some systems on the market that are already using communication protocols similar to TCP/IP, so 802.11x communication (WiFi) can be easily integrated. Don't know who is doing it, but I know it is out there. We had a discussion about this at AIO a while back and someone actually said they could justify the need for it.

This is no different than wireless internet connection. The midi from the console goes to a wireless transmitter and the chamber has the receiver. Unless it is multi channel, it shares the usual latency problems. Also it is subject to interference - an old car drives by and the organ goes crazy, plus someone outside can easily intercept and record the data. This is just another trendy gadget. I have wireless internet but I don't use it as it is slow and no better than dialup. Right now several midi cables are no different from the power cord. Maybe put batteries and wheels on the console and the organist can drive around the theatre or concert hall. Talk about a "touring organ".

Re: Wireless Console
I have heard of such things, but have never seen one. I wonder if it is an infra-red system and who supplies it? I also wonder just how dependable it is?

Yes indeed! I've seen this on more than one occasion where the console would normally be housed in a loft, but for a concert was moved down to ground level. I asked the curator about the connections and he said that they replaced everything with a digital wireless system.
Some of the theatre organs I've played have a similar system, but are still tethered by a coax cable -still much nicer than the large bundles of cable from yesteryear!

Wireless Console
Yesterday I attended a recital and was surprised to find that the connection between the console and windchests is wireless. The console is on a movable platform and need only plug into a standard 110 volt outlet.
Is this the wave of the future?Tags: None
