  • Organs in Paris

I was going thru some photos this morning and from a trip to Paris a few years ago I took a few photos of some organs..I don't know the names of the churchs or anything about the organs, maybe someone here can let me know the names of the churchs and perhaps something about the organs?

    here goes:

Great pictures NYCFarmboy! I'm sure when SB32 comes online, he may recognize them. I'll be curious what he says about the organs.

      Couldn't resist contributing one myself:

beautiful! I got those two top pics just walking around Paris.....literally just was walking down a street with a friend and happened upon whatever churches those were and popped in for a quick pic.......while I was in Notre Dame construction blocked a few of the big pipe organ there although I did get a photograph of the choir organ from the back!

That is the 1755 Clicquot organ at the Church of St. Roch, Paris, France - on which I've performed. [:)] I was told that it had the loudest reeds in Paris! [:D] Perhaps not, but they are charmingly raucous.

If I'm not mistaken, the casework was crafted by the king's shipbuilders. Notable organists at St-Roch: Balbastre, Lefébure-Wély, Mulet, and Cochereau.

That is the 1971 Schwenkedel organ at Église Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin.

Two interesting organists held the title of organiste accompagnateur here: Alexis Chauvet and Joseph Franck (brother of César).

Jason, you had mequite perplexed fora moment... [:S]

Since thisthread is about Parisian organs, I didn't recognize your photo at all! [:D]

Doing a "file properties" on the photo solved the riddle for me.

Jason, I believe that is the 1974 Harrison and Harrison organ at Wells Cathedral in England.

By the way, that is a very nice photograph you took, Jason. From this view it better allows one too see the detail of the ornate pipe shades.

A few years ago when my wife and I were visiting in Paris, we stepped into the Church of St. Roch, Paris, France while the organ was being played. It has the most glorious sound that I have ever heard.

Sadly my only visit to St Roch was for an organ and electric guitar concert back in my college days. I thought it might be really cool. I was wrong.

I don't know what it says that I actually knew that picture was of the St Roch organ. I'm really puzzled as to how I'd know that. I must try to hear it next time I'm in Paris if the reeds are as raucous as suggested. I'm a total child when it comes to this: "Louder!! LOUDER!!!" [:D]

Thanks, but it was a lot nicer day in Paris when NYCFarmboy took his pictures. It was gloomy that day in Wells, so I appreciate your comment!

For raucous reeds, I can be patient!!

Soubasse32, this seems as good a time as any to ask if I'd know you (or know of you) in real life. It sounds like you've done lots of recitals around Europe, and I'm curious to know your secret identity. I will of course understand if you're reluctant to share such info!

There are so many wonderful instruments situated in Paris which are overshadowed by the likes of Notre Dame, St.Sulpice, etc.

A few of my own favourites include:

St.Philippe du Roule (IIIP Cavaille-Coll. I have a wonderful recording of the Vierne Toccata from there. Henri Mulet was titulaire here for a time)

St.Augustin (IIIP Cavaille-Coll. Past titulaires include Eugene Gigout, Andre Fleury)

Notre Dame des Champs (IIP Cavaille-Coll, said to have the most beautiful flute harmonique in Paris)

St.Antoine des Quinze Vingts (IIP Cavaille-Coll - from the same origins as Sacre Coeur)

                              and my own personal favourite...

Sacre Coeur (IVP Cavaille-Coll. So few recordings seem to exist - apparently they are only allowed to record on one day of the year. It is frequently out of tune, but those en-chamade reeds are excellent - although they are not actually en-chamade - they are hooded, and I believe also enclosed with the remainder of the Solo Expressif. I'd have to check that, though.
