Re: Antiphonal and Echo Divisions
It all depends on what the organ is used for.
Antiphonal divisions typically are used to bolster congregational singing at the opposite end of a long nave. A large instrument may have both a Great and a Swell located antiphonally from the main organ. Some antiphonal divisions are actually entire organs, with their own console.
An Echo division typically has very soft voices, lots of celestes, etc. This division is usually located within the main organ, but occasionally you will see it located antiphonally, perhaps in the ceiling as a "celestial" division.
Echos sometimes contain high pressure stops which are surprisinglyloud up close; however the effect to the listener should be one of softness or distance.
I would put a principal chorus in an antiphonal division, plus a heroic reed of some sort. A big 8' flute might be nice too.
An Echo might have a very simple spec such as this:
- Concertflute 8' or Gedeckt 8'
- Viole8'
- Viole Celeste 8'
- Flûte d'amour 4'
- Vox Humana 8'
- Tremolo
- Chimes [/list]
Some Echos may be a bit larger, with more Celestes (including perhaps a Flute Celeste), a Diapason and a louder reed such as a Trumpet. A French Horn might be found here, but I like it better in the Solo division.

Re: Antiphonal and Echo Divisions
In my opinion.....
A fairly compleate Antiphonals should include: (All under expression except 8 prin)
8 principal
8 gemshorn (or some other hybrid string)
8 flute
4 octave
4 flute
2 Doublette (pulled from mixture)
III mixture (2')
8 Chorus reed
Ant Ped:
16' Flute ext of manuel 8ft Flute
8 Flute
This spec is with the intention of drawing/blending withthe sound of the main organ to surround the listener with sound.
Echo Divisions can be home to any means of cool colors.
I would like a dark Wooly 8 flute, keen set of 8strings, 8 flute and celeste, 8 vox, 8 orchestral reed. (assuming the echo is somewhere in the back of the room... or ceiling.

Re: Antiphonal and Echo Divisions
The First Presbyterian Church of Glenns Falls, New York has an Antiphonal organ which is almost as big as the main organ in the front of the church, and in fact is the former main organ of the church, the front organ being installed later. If memory serves me correctly, the main organcontains around eighty-five ranks, and the Anticphonal has about sixty ranks. Thisorgan ranks number forty-six on the list of the world's largest organs.Mike
My home organ is a Theatre III with an MDS II MIDI Expander.

Re: Antiphonal and Echo Divisions
We have two Echo divisions in Battle Creek; both Skinner
op. 788 has an 8' Chimney Flute, 8' Vox, and Chimes (http://www-personal.umich.edu/~sjwarner/StThomas1.html)
op. 904 has an 8' Cor de Nuit, 8' Vox Angelica II, a Vox and Chimes. This echo has a pretty heavy trem on it. I used the whole division profusely last week when I played the organ for my class.
