  • Nomenclature for Diapason stops

Thoughts for a unique name for a 42 scale diapason on 6 inches of wind? VERY Tubby/flutey romantic stop from the 1930's.

Adding it to my Reuter 822 in the Swell...
I already have the following (or adding):

    Open Diapason 8'
    Violin Diapason 8'
    Montre 8'

So I need a different name for this large scale one..thoughts on that? I was going to call it a "HORN DIAPASON" but this rank doesn't have the bridges infront of the mouths that that rank has?

Even though it's not quite the scale, you could call it a Stentorphone.

You could call it Fred, or Ethel, butjust don't call it late for dinner[*-)][:P]

How about Prestant or Praestant, it wouldn't be correct, or I suppose you could call it principal, but that may not be entirely correct either. You could call it Diapason II, but that is pretty boring. My vote is for Fred of Ethel.

The largest Diapason really belongs on the Great - are you sure about putting it in the Swell?

I'd avoid Prestant as that brings to mind a stop one octave abovea Principal (usually a 4'), or something a bit more classical in nature.

I think you might consider the term Diapason Sonora, or Diapason Magna. Supposedly the Diapason Sonora has a bit more harmonic development of the two.

The 42 scale diapason is part of the Opus 412 Reuter I just unloaded yesterday. I'm putting the entire chest in my upstairs back bedroom as a "swell organ" to the 822's exposed "Great" organ. I agree in a perfect world it should be exposed, but the pipes are really not quite "display" material. They are in structurally sound shape but are of a dark spotted metal. If I put them out front somewhere I"d have to paint them! lol

I love the Diapason Sonora, Magna & Stentorphone & Grand Diapason ideas!!!!!

I imagine it will be used more as a blending stop with my other "solo" stops such as the Trumpet, Clarinet, French Horn & Vox..so manybe "Solo Diapason" as it is really going on more a "SOLO" organ than on a true Swell organ?

Hey, why not Rustaphone? That would be a tribute to the builder, and would reflect the current state of the finish. [;)]

fun!!..Farm Diapason..liken it!......Rustaphone would have been appropriate for the Horn Diapason I gave away down in El Paso off the Opus 195..it was rusting very badly for some reasons where it had been mitered..then unmitered...

                    or "Hoosierpason".

                    What's a Hoosierpason? A Hoosierpason is a Hoosier Diapason.

What is a hoosier? Other than a native of Indiana no one really knows.
                    lol

This particular diapason is not very "magna" like it its sound despite its scale:
..it is really basically a somewhat big sounding very tubby flute and actually pretty soft speaking.

                    sound clip of it at:

                      You could call it a Hoosierphone  < ; - D

Golly, what a throbbing trem engaged with that rank.

Man, that has got to be the "flutiest" diapason I've ever heard...

A flutey Diapason ... hmm, how about Flutophone?

                            No, skip that! [:D]

Since it is so mellow and soft, I think I would just be happy with the term Diapason.
