£2000! ($4000) and its only for a 1/2 hourAND its only the starting bid.

Granted, the money is for charity, still at £66/minute you'd have to savour every single moment. No time to glance at all the different stop names, just grab a bunch of stops andplay.

Perhaps a full hour might just be justifiable at that price, but with a 1/2 hour most of the time would be wasted putting on organ shoes, finding the right music, selecting stops, adjusting bench...leaving you with only just a few minutes actual playing time,

By the way, someone once told me that it is possible to play the organ at the Royal Albert Hall for a fee. Does anyone know how much? How long do you get to play?

    1971 Allen Organ TC-3S (#42904) w/sequential capture system.
    Speakers: x1 Model 100 Gyro, x1 Model 105 & x3 Model 108.

I guess it is probably only half an hour to prevent too much noise pollution or musical vandelism if the winning bidder is a Slash Metal fan or can only play 'chopsticks'. Imagine that on full organ with Fanfare Trumpets [:S]

That's ridiculous. How stuck-up can you possibly be about your organ that you'd auction off a mere half-hour of playing time for 2,000 pounds? That's just disgusting.

Indeed, lets keep an eye on this auction to see if anyone wins it. I doubt it'll get any bidders (or if it does, it will be those with more money than sense).

I wouldn't mind having ago on St. Paul's Organ, if only to play 'I Will Survive' and The Birdy Song.

Bearing in mind how much of a rip-off the UK is - I feel like weeping when I go past a gas station!

well if the proceeds are for charity I suppose it is ok, but this idea just seems to be not very well thought out. Lets be honest..there aren't THAT many people who would be interested in playing the organ, even if it were free?

I'm with you choirmaster. And add "Take me out to the ballgame" to your list! That would really have Anglican eyes rolling and tongues wagging.

But seriously, I would give an arm and a leg to have a go on this organ. [:P]

I can't think of ten organs, let alone one that I would pay $4,000 to play. I'll be surprised if they get any bites on this one.....notwithstanding a pure donation.

I could start building my own with that money, and I have been incubating that idea for quite some time.

Quite frankly, the lengths that they have gone to do not surprise me in the slightest, and I find this form of fundraising absolutely disgusting.

Whoever is responsible for sanctioning at St.Paul's should be ashamed of themselves.

I would seriously be interested to see if anyone actually bids for this.

I would think that any fund raising for a worthy cause is always an admirable idea, but this has definitely not been thought through properly. It is most definitely too little time for too much money.

It will be suprising if anyone at all bids. Wouldn't it perhaps be better if they offered say an hour for maybe acouple of hundred a shot?! If they made a day of it with multiple lots available they would easily make the two grand, maybe more. So they make the money for charity, and more people would have the opportunity to play one of the truly great instruments in the UK - without needing to remortgate the house!

As it stands though its overpriced exclusionistrubbish!

Thats actually a good idea MonsieurOrgue. I would consider paying say maybe £100-£200 if I could get 30 or 45 minutes on the organ.

Surely they should do what you suggest and have more sessions but at a cheaper price. I would think the uptake would be far greater and the whole thing would be looked upon more postively. At the moment it just looks like a blatant rip off - albeit for charity.
