  • Specification Letters?

    Hi,

I have noticed quite often in larger organs there is a letter next to stop names. Take a look at the NPOR of Temple Church, London for example https://www.npor.org.uk/NPORView.html?RI=E02047 . Every pedal stop has a letter to the far right hand side of it, and some on the manuals too. Can someone please elaborate on the meaning of them?

    Many thanks,
    Samuel

On that particular stop list, the letters in the pedal division are indicating the rank used for the voice; the pedal uses unification on several of the ranks to provide more stops than unique voices. Different builders use different means to indicate the same thing, such as a pedal voice with "extension of 16 Trompette" on the 8' Trompette, or "12 pipes" to indicate it is an extension of another voice's rank.

So all the stops which have an ‘A' next to them utilise the same rank of pipes. I guess this is useful for the pedals where often only one pedal is pressed at one time. Thanks for replying.

The lowest pipes are the most expensive in terms of materials and fabrication costs. Ideally, each stop would be independent so that, say, an octave stop would be voiced for the best blend with it's unison stop. Sharing pipes is a less expensive, but not better, way to do it. If limited to a few voices it is not terribly damaging to the cohesive sound of the organ.
