    How do dump tremulants work?

i installed An old Estey that was stored in a garage for 15 years

its all up and running, mostly tuned. Sounds great. So I'm starting to think about the swell and tremulant.

it came with this one in storage.
It attaches directly to a chest, but the chest had no apparent spot for it.

so I tried installing on the wind line between the regulator and chest, but when I turn it on, it just dumps air. No tremulant.

i wonder if I'm missing parts, or it needs to be closer to chest?

It looks like you have missing parts. You need a bellows with a weighted lid and valve assembly on it. The idea is that the bellows bounces up and down giving intermittent air dumps to produce the tremolo effect. Here's another description from "Organ Building for Amateurs" a fun book from 1887.

Is the author "Wicks" of the Wicks Organ Company fame?

Not the same "Wicks" as the US organ company as far as I know. This is a British gentleman from the late 1800s who gives instructions on making organ pipes using rolled up paper. It would be interesting to know if anybody ever made an organ from his plans.

Actually, yes. There are a couple threads here on the Forum about the projects. Personally, I wonder if paper towel rolls (and others) wouldn't function just as well.

it seemed like it had nearly all the pieces, except one extra valve for it to oscillate.
so on a whim, I had an adjustable led flasher relay laying around, hooked it to the magnet.... and it works perfectly

im not sure what kind of load that the relay draws, probobly not safe with 100 year old cloth covered Wiring.

for best effect, should it be closer to the chest? Or regulator?
