  • New Organ at St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna

A Facebook friend just sent me this video, and I enjoyed it very much, short as it is. There are several nice shots of the new console, very modern and "high tech" looking. Perhaps a little too non-traditional? But the keyboards look lovely and all even and level and comfortable, in contrast to the vintage-looking keyboards so often seen on an historic console. I haven't found details on exactly how this "works" -- the single console located centrally apparently can play both the front and rear pipe organs in this rather huge church. Perhaps a modern wireless connection? Does anyone know anything more about this?

How new is new? I was in Vienna and in St. Stephens but it was a couple of years ago, and before I started studying organ so I paid insufficient attention. I'd go back in a heartbeat, stunningly beautiful city.

The video was posted on October 4, 2020 and it shows scenes of the organ being erected. Thank you for posting this John.

I would like to know who's giant long sleeved t-shirt is hanging in the chancel? [at 1:49]

I wondered that too, Bill! I wonder what season that celebrated?

I take it that this is a project only just now completed. Here's an article about it from last month, and seems to say that this month's concerts will be the first public hearing of the restored instrument.

I saw that giant tee shirt too, and it actually kinda freaked me out at first. I was watching the video closely, trying to catch as many details as I could about the organ and the new console, when the giant shirt popped into view and startled me! Some kind of modern art, no doubt.
