  • 2' Portative Organ Kit?

I am new to the organ forum. I would like to find a 2' portative organ kit. It could be one purchased by an enthusiast and never built or one partially built. Or, it could be a 2' portative organ complete but for sale. Is this the group where I can post, or is there a better group in the Organ Forum?

    Thanks,
    Larry

There are a few, but only one I know that does a kit. However, if you email them, probably any of them could send you the wood and pipes, etc. for less money.

In Europe Wolkenstayn is well known:
      http://www.wolkenstayn.de/Portative/...struments.html

And there's this one in Spain:

      Marcus Stahl builds them:

      Cornetto Verlag offers a kit:

      In the US:
      Sean Koreski:

Here's the source I used for many of these. It has a couple of other leads, not all of the links work though:

Thank you for this information. Apparently the Baltimore Recorders information is outdated. The only manufacturer of portative organ kits that I have found is Skrabl in Slovenia. And their kits are very expensive. The 3' kit shipped to USA is $8,000. Far beyond what I would expect to pay for a kit. The Renaissance Workshop operated out of Germany, but even though there is still a website that pops up all the time, the company has been out of business for about 4 years. I was told that the owner died and the company closed.

Thanks for the update. I did some research on this a while back. Another option is to talk to a local organ builder. They could make you a portative, but that would probably be pretty expensive. But they may be able to just make you the pipes. With the woodworking involved, it's almost as much work to just make the case and bellows yourself. You can get the leather from columbia organ leathers, and use hide glue (recommended), and wood from a local source. Wood prices have increased a lot recently, which would contribute to the costliness of a kit.

When consulting a local builder, I'd recommend Cornell Zimmer in Charlotte, NC. There is also a fellow who used to play organ in Greenville who now works for Goulding & Smith(?) in Indianapolis, IN. If you contact him, he might have a line on one near you which may be available.

        Hope this helps.
