Hmm Its been over a month since Ive posted here! Where have I been????

 

Anyways, I was offered a pipe organ for $2000. But I dont know if its worth it. It sounds nice, But what do you guys think?

 

No name. 5 ranks, 2m 25pedals. Nice wood keys, and tracker action. Kind of a weird design, but looks fine.

The short answer is yes, it is worth it. It would make a fine practice instrument for you home or appartment.

Yes that is what I figured. The 2 reed ranks are ?flue? pipes. I think thats the term. There is a Dulzian and oboe. Both at 4'

Just for clarification...

There are two types of pipes in a pipe organ: flues and reeds. Flues are the types of pipes that are like whistles (strings, principals, and flutes). Reeds use vibrating reeds to create sound (trumpets, clarinets, oboes).

Usually, a 5 rank organ only has 1 reed, so I'm surprised that you said that there were two of them. Further, I'm surprised that you said that they are both at 4'. Are you sure they aren't at 8'?

yes the 2 reeds are different. They are not actual reeds but I think they are called free reeds. Common on these small organs.

I'm not sure if it's worth $2000.  It almost looks like it was thrown together by an amateur.  I can't imagine it would be a very useful specification, so make sure you go and play it before committing to buying it.

Hmm. Well, based on the pictures that you have uploaded, it doesn't look like there are any reeds at all. It looks like there are 2 ranks of flue pipes, maybe an 8' stopped flute and a 4' small-scaled principal or string rank. I'm guessing that the top manual plays only the 8' flute, and the bottom manual plays both ranks.

I'm really not convinced it will be worth $2000. For the same cost, or a little more, you could find a larger unified organ with a full sized AGO pedal board, with a more comprehensive stoplist, built by a well known (if not well respected) builder, such as Reuter or Wicks.

I would also strongly recommend taking an experienced organist with you to investigate it. Make sure that everything works as it should and that the sound is pleasing to you. Then get a second and third opinion. If it's still seems like a good idea then wait a few days and come back and play it again. Only then, should you discuss a price. Even then, I would offer $500. $750 tops.

To answer one of your questions, there are 5 ranks. You only see 3 in one of the pictures. The reeds are like those on a 4 rank wicks portable organ. Not an actuall reed but one of those "free reeds" 2 of those, the top manual plays those, bottom= 8' gedact 4' quint 2' principal, couplers, PEDAL= 8' gedact and couplers

oh there is an offset chest behind the organ, its hard to see in these pics. The organ is only 6' 7" So it fits nicely into my home.

I second that. (bold numbers mine for emphasis)

Brandon, I think I understand what you're saying now. The reeds on the organ of discussion are like the reeds of a pump organ or accordion. As you mentioned, Wicks occasionally used them - to replace 16' pedal stops.

Somewhat unusual for an organ to have them mixed in with actual pipes in the manuals, but feasible, I suppose.

Now I'm really curious as to who built it!

- Worth is based on market value;

- Market value is based on the number of people lining up and competing to purchase the instrument; the law of supply and demand; and in this case, barring bizzare anomalies: zero demand.

-What's it worth to the vendor? Nothing! He obviously wants to get rid of it.It is of no value to him. To expect someone to actually pay him for the priviledge of carting away his garbage is an unrealistic expectation. [:(]The best he can reasonably anticipate,is that someone out there willcartit awaywithout charging him for their services.

Since this instrument seems to be entirely resistable; a reasonable intial offer would be to cart the thing away without charging him for your services. And if he gets a better offer . . . . in his wildest dreams!.<giggle>
