I came across this video today, and I thought some of you might enjoy hearing this 32' Contra Trombone from "ground zero." It's fun to see the expressions on peoples' faces who are standing so close!

That was interesting, to say the least. In 2007 my choir traveled through the British Isles and visited a lot of big churches (not that one, though); several of them had big floor-mounted flue pipes like those in the video. I would not have expected them to be Contra Trombones, though. Was I imagining it, or did the view of those pipes seem to flicker when they were playing? I suppose the vibrating air sheet could distort the view of the pipe through it, and those low pipes are at a frequency that might be visible.

I wish we could have full-length 32' pipes in our Klais, but it just isn't possible (without blocking the rose window--verboten). I keep hoping we might be able to use Haskelled pipes, though.

The visible pipes in the video were indeed flue pipes. That the 32' reed that we hear at the very end(and which seems to alarm the visitors) is most likelyjust inside the organ case, out of sight.

Odd though, since that case doesn't seem very high. The 32' reed pipes would have to bemitered and/or behalf length (which would explain why they sounded so raucous). It is also possible the 32' reed was just overhead somewhere (but the camera doesn't pan around enough for a good view).

I'm certain that thePedal would sound more balanced out in the room.

I'll bet that it sounds stunning out in the room, it did seem like they were standing right beside or below it. That entire Suite Gothique is one of my all time favorites.
