  • What does Juilliard offer? What do they have?

What kind of organ does Juilliard use? Do they even have one of their own? I notice they offer classes for them.

Does anyone have any more info about their organ/program?

Juilliard has a newly renovated Holtkamp organ in Paul Hall, a Rodgers digital organ in the Bruno Walter Orchestra Studio, and three pipe organs on the fifth floor. There is a very interesting organ by Kuhn in Alice Tully Hall (in Lincoln Center). Of course, there areis an immensevariety of very fine instruments in the greater New York area.

Paul Jacobs teaches organ at Juilliard. It is avery competitive school, so you must be able to play difficult repertoireexceedingly well. More information can be found on their website.

Do you know what the entrance test is like? I bet its real hard! Wonder what the cost per year is there.

You must first submit a video to pre-qualify. If you pass that, then the exam for undergrads is as follows:

        1. A prelude and fugue for organ by Bach or other composer of the late Baroque period.

        2. An organ composition by a 19th-century composer.

        3. An organ composition by a representative 20th-century composer.

Memorization is not required, but is 'encouraged'. [:)] While the audition process is not difficult (if you really play well) it can be intimidating - especiallyif you keep in mind thatyouwould becompeting with some of the finest young organists in the world...

Information on tuition can be found here. You did look at the link I sent you, no? [;)] All the info you seek is there...

While an education at Juilliard is an admirable goal, there aremany additional benefitsfrom living in a cultural mecca such as New York City.

          WHOA!!!!! I AMOST FELL OVER!!!!!

Juilliard is a little bit more expensive than I thought! AGH! Where is that 1 lottery ticket that gets you a 2 million dollar pipe organ in your house and 4 years at Juilliard??!?!

Hmm, well I will have to go back and read, but I hope they offer some scholarships or something.

I'm not sure it exists, yet. Its lack of existence is just more proof that no one ever consults the organists on anything important, like the lottery.

They have a lunchbox of a holtkamp with an ssl relay in paul hall, and a flentrop tracker and two other piles for practice organs. honestly, i was appalled when i saw what the great juiliard had to offer. i took care of the 4 organs for a few years, and none of them were anything to write home about.Especially after an imbalanced student wiped out a few ranks of one of the practice organs in a fit of rage.

Paul Jacobs is a great teacher (studied under John Weaver) but the organs... not so much...

this summer, all of the practice organs will be moved to a new practice space recently constructed.
