What would cause me to "hear" the pumping?

I hold a chord and increase treadle speed to increase volume. As I do this, I begin to "hear" the pumping - each downward push of a treadle causes a slight increase in volume, which then returns to normal level when I let the treadle return upward. It's like opening/closing the swell every time I pump quickly on the treadles.

I can greatly increase volume by pumping faster - but the faster I pump, the more obvious the "pumping sound" becomes. The distortion ends when I slow down my treadle work.

    Thanks.

Inner flap valves are shot. Or something is leaking between feeders and reservoir.

Your reservoir is not holding the vacuum as it should so that the pumping action has to continuously provide sufficient vacuum. Because of the rhythm of the pumping you will "hear" the corresponding action. You just gotta find that leak!
