  • Echo stop on Chicago Cottage Organ co. 1890

    Hi all,
I'm new to pump organs having just picked up my first one a few months back. It was in pretty good condition given that it had been unloved and stored in a shed, but the bellows leaked badly and some of the stops didn't work.

Today I've been working on repairing it and have got the Vox Humana working, the bellows sealed up a bit better and the 4ft Principal stop fixed up (cut a replacement "fork" to connect the stop to the lever).

I'm stuck trying to figure out the "Echo" stop though. From what I can see it's got a linkage to the 8ft Diapason but there's also a mysterious second "fork" (don't know the technical term) on the stop handle which has a small channel in it but is dangling loose with nothing remotely in the vicinity looking like it would fit.

What does the echo stop traditionally mean on a small organ like this? The only references I've found are to big cathedral organs where they connect to an external set of pipes elsewhere. I figure that's not the case here, but can't see what it's designed to do.

It's the third rod back here. You can see the extra wooden link dangling loose and with a much smaller notch:

The intent was to open the Diapason mute just a small amount for a soft sound. The celeste stop is the one that usually has 2 forks, one to open the celeste and the other to open the diapason, as a combination stop.

On my adler, I have two like this on the bass and the treble -- a "diapason bass" and a "diapason treble" which are the two that open up the diapason and the melodia mutes fully when pulled respectively.
