  • Beckwith Reed Organ Project

Hello there! A few months ago, I aquired a Beckwith Chapel Reed Organ. This forum helped me to find it, with lots of helpful advice being given to me in this thread: https://organforum.com/forums/forum/...-advice-wanted
I have quite enjoyed playing it, despite a few notes ciphering on lower stops. That is still an issue I need to look into...

A somewhat annoying issue, which has recently arisen, is the following. When I first purchased it, a few notes buzzed weirdly on the Celeste and Clarionet stops. The buzzing on the Celeste stop entirely disappeared after a while, and the Clarionet buzzing diminished.
Recently, some notes cause a strange rattling sound when I play them. These notes are mainly C's, some on the upper, some on the lower half. The rattling does not seem to come from the actual reed area actually, and, interestingly, when I pull out the "Diapason Forte" stop, the rattling entirely stops. This seems to be an issue related more to something in the upper part of the organ, not where the reeds are. I'd like to take the top off and take a look, but I was wondering if y'all had any tips before I do so. It could just go away if I took off the top and put it back on again too... It's just strange that it disappears when I turn on the Diapason Forte stop though...

    Thank y'all!

May not be applicable to your case, but I had a buzzing reed once, and when I looked into it, a stray pitman had been sucked into the reed cell, and was bouncing on the reed. Just a thought...

It's a sympathetic vibration. You have surmised it is related to the Forte. With a helper holding down the key, open the back and start touching this and that until you zero in on the vibrating part. Silence it with some small bit of felt padding. The first thing I'd check is the spring that keeps the forte louver closed. Then the stop link that makes it open.

Thank you both! I totally forgot I had made this thread and hadn't checked back for a while... :-> Yeah, I think I'll go ahead and take off the top and try to find the vibration. Thanks!
