• Ok i admit i did a stuff up here...can someone help a beginner :)

    G'day everyone :)

When i took my organ apart , i was careful as possible withall theparts and everything was recorded were they came from ect.I also took many pictures as a reference tohow everything was set out.I have now finishedmy cleanout and repairs and am in the process of putting it all back together.Everything has gone like clock work till i get to the "stickers/plungers" under the keys. When i removed themi simply placed an elastic band around them to keep them safe and now realize that they are all very slightly different lengths.I appear to have long ,medium and short but the difference between each size is barley noticeable.

So today i reinstalled them and checked the keyboard and of course it was all out , so i spent a few hours changing them around and manged to pretty much get it almost right.I'm now down to about 10 keys that i justcant seem to get level.

Now I'm sure someone else on here must of made this same error at one time and i was wondering if anyone could tell me the best way to get it back in the correct order again?.Do the bass end keys have the longest , leading to medium in the middle then short at the treble end?

Is there a hint in helping get them correctly level again?

I appreciate any helps and look forward to the "told you so" comments as well......but hey i learn from my mistakes and now i know for next time...lol.

    Many thanks Daniel :)

You probably did all you can do at this point. Usually the stickers, or pitmans as they are sometimes called, were shimmed with small pieces of paper or felt to acheive a level keyboard. It takes very little to make it un-level. Trial and error at this point will help you level it.

When removing the stickers, the best way I have found is to take a strip of masking tape the width of the keyboard, and stick it alongside the stickers while they are still racked. Then, take another long strip of tape and go along the backside the same way. Then remove the stickers with the tape strip attached. They will all be in order that way. Make sure you label which is the bass end and which is the treble. Then when you are ready to reinstall them, you can remove them from the tape strip in order.

    Hope this helps!

Mason & Hamlin sometimes graduated their pitmans in size from bass to treble, because the sound board also gets thinner toward the treble end. So the longer pitmans go in the bass. You must go through the PITA process of lining them up in size order. Next time you take them out, you number them in India ink with a technical pen, or build a pitman rack; a double row of 61 holes 1/4" diameter in a plank. Holes should be blind, i.e.: not all the way through the plank., which should be labeled B/T or Bass/Treble.

I'm kind of a stickler for putting screws back in their same holes, labeling stuff, disassembling only a little at a time, etc.
