  • Allen Smart Recorder and MIDI to USB Adapter

A while back I purchased a nice Allen AP-7 Organ, and now I added an Allen Smart Recorder to it. This is the diskette-based device. It works well, as I got if figured out this weekend and was able to record a couple of my favorite hymns and play them back. My question is this, I also purchased a Midi plus 2x2 USB MIDI interface, can that be tied into the smart recorder so I can play MIDI files from my Laptop through my Allen Organ. The whole MIDI thing is new to me and just starting to get my head wrapped around it. Thanks, Zach

    Zach,

Did you have a question, or are you just introducing yourself? Congratulations on the purchase! I envy you your MIDI.

Way too many organs to list, but I do have 5 Allens:
    • MOS-2 Model 505-B / ADC-4300-DK / ADC-5400 / ADC-6000 (Symphony) / ADC-8000DKC
    • Lowrey Heritage (DSO-1)
    • 11 Pump Organs, 1 Pipe Organ & 7 Pianos

      Hi Zack,

Congratulations on the purchase. The Smart Recorder has a MIDI Thru port that can be used to transmit data from your laptop MIDI Out to the organ.

So right now, I have 3 cables coming from the organ, in, out, and thru going to the smart recorder. That's where I get confused, which ones get hooked to the smart recorder? Or does the thru from the organ not get used and the thru on the smart recorder gets hooked to the out on the MIDI adapter?

Huh. As I began trying to draw this out, I finally recognized your dilemma. If you were looking to add a voice-module, the MIDI THRU on the Smart Recorder would work, but you kind of want two MIDI IN connections to the organ. Someone else may have a good idea, but I don't see a way that doesn't involve some additional MIDI device to merge/switch the laptop's output and the Smart Recorder output.

Other than that, options would be to port MIDI files from one device to the other, so they're all on one platform, or simply swap plugs when you want to use the other device.

I was under the impression that Allen Organs do not play well with other devices, so I needed to run any computer-based MIDI files thru the smart recorder. I have Organ Assist on my Laptop now and it doesn't offer any Allen Organ options.
