  • Making Hammond sound like Elect. piano

I think I heard that if you pull 1' drawbar all the way out, and push the other drawbars all in you can get A Rhodes piano sound. Any other tricks?

There are plenty of things that a Hammond can do, but pulling out the 1' drawbar on it's own will not make a sound like a Rhodes in a million years. The Hammond will never sound like a Rhodes, whatever you try to do, apart from a vague similarity when playing with the 2nd harmonic percussion on high notes. In fact the Hammond will only ever sound like a Hammond. That's its sole purpose in life! :->
It's not what you play. It's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.

I see you have an A100 and a ventilator. Pull out the 1 drawbar and play it.

Here's a suitcase rhodes. Listen to this clip:

Then ask yourself if they sound alike....

Buy a $50 Hammond H100. Put $150 of new electrolytic capacitors in it. Turn the Perc pot level way up. Put it on Glock percussion. Put on B preset, drawbars 01830036668. Hammer it out. Reverb is optional.

Not sure youtube puts that suitcase beauty in it's best light. Lower octaves sounded muddy. However, the experiment continues. Yes, andyg the Hammond is what it is. delaware dave, with the 1' all out, my A-100 sounds like a
Hammond imitating a Rhodes. indianajo, you have piqued my interest, with your usual creativity. Thanks all for this slightly OT discussion.

Didn't Brendoon simulate an Electic Piano in one of his music videos using his Hammond Percussion? I'm not sure of the drawbar settings.

              Waaaaaalllll yes n' no.

Here's the one with the Hammond, 2nd Harmonic perc pulled out PLUS the 4ft drawbar for sustain. It's at about 1:50ish:

But here's the one with the REAL Rhodes:

I can't really claim they're the same, but the perc does do a good enough EP imitation at a pinch.... for a high solo line at least.

I am sure Keith Jarrett will do better but ...:)
Don't remember any setting but the key was in the chorus and reverb somehow.
On some occasions it does sound as Rhodes.

Thanks guys! Just the kind of Friday morning break I needed! My thoughts are; the Rhodes has it's own classy sound, yet the Hammond takes that sound and messes with it, in an interesting way. Maybe even a liberating way.
Hmmm. May have to work on a vid of my own now!

                        Thanks Hamnyam,
                        Fun's the operative word!
I'd almost believe it makes the world go 'round if I didn't know physics and God did it.

However, I can't refuse an invitation like that.
Here again in glorious black and white for Hamnyam and those who forgot about this old track which explains about TG's, magnets and magic trolls....
