  • Hammond D?

    Hey everybody!

So there's an old Hammond organ in my church that we're moving to the choir loft, and I can't exactly place the model of it. I can't seem to locate a nameplate on the back, though I haven't looked inside for one (where it is on my M3 at home). The guy who originally had it said it was a C2, but there aren't any tabs on it, and I know the C2 has vibrato tabs in the left corner. However, in the left corner up near the hinge for the cover is a switch that appears to turn a chorus generator on, and it looks original to the instrument, not a modification. There is a wheel of vibrato options, not unlike a B3 but it seems to have less options for chorus/vibrato. It's in a very C3/RT-3 type case for a church, with modesty panels and all, which leads me to believe it's in the D series, but almost every D series Hammond I've seen has a chorus drawbar on the right corner, this particular organ doesn't have one. Has anybody seen this before? I regret the lack of photos, but it appears to be very old, at least mid-1940's. There is also a Hammond-made tone cabinet with it that I've never seen. Not like a PR40 which is pretty squat, but tall, like a Leslie 122 without rotors. I didn't get a good look at the pedalboard (which is detached and in a closet), but it looked bigger than the average Hammond pedalboard at first glance, possibly AGO. I'm pretty bewildered by it, I was hoping any of you groovy people out there knew anything about it! Thanks!

    Sincerely,
    Dylan

If there is no chorus drawbar on the upper right, it is not a D.

Vibrato models have a 6-position rotary switch, V1-off-V2-off-V3-off. There is a two-position switch above that which toggles the vibrato chorus effect.

RT will be post-war, with an AGO pedal board & pedal solo unit (controlled by 8 tilting stop tablets to the right of the lower manual).

If not, and its pre-war, its likely a C (later field-modded to CV) or a post-war factory CV.

Name plate will be inside the organ, on the swell-assembly.

Your tone cabinet might well be an HR40.

          Does it have 25 or 32 bass pedals? 25 pedals=CV, 32 pedals=RT.
          Current organs: AV, M-3, A-100
          Current Leslies: 22H, 122, 770

A tall, somewhat Leslie-looking tone cabinet might be a D-20 or DR-20. Those were fairly common.

Is there one or two expression pedals ? It is possible that it might be an concert E.

Hey everybody! Thank you for your prompt responses!

Judging from the outward appearance I can confirm thanks to this thread that it is indeed a CV. There's only a single expression pedal, and a 25 pedal bass at later observation. However, I haven't had a chance yet to take a peek under the hood to get a serial number to get exactly what year it's from. Given the production years of the CV, it's gotta be pushing 70 years old! I also haven't had a chance to get a good look at the tone cabinet, it's not stored in the same place as the organ- but I will most definitely keep you posted when I do! We're gonna try and move it up to the loft and put it adjacent to the nice ol' Rodgers organ they have up there that I've been playing at masses. All we need is a Leslie now! Thanks again for all your help!

                Sincerely,
                Dylan
