  • Hammond C2 run motor diagnostic

    Hello
    I have a Hammond C2 - 220v / 50 Hz.
    My Hammond has a noisy run motor, but one week ago it worked.
    Now start motor works very well, but run motor is having problems running.


    I remove wires of coil (red and blue wires), and i had the measurement of resistance (ohm).
    Coil Nº1 => 1.13 Kohms (See picture 1)
    Coil Nº2 => infinit Kohms (See picture 2)
    Both Coils=> 1.13 Kohms (See picture 3)

    if i measure the two terminals which connect to the run motor => 137 ohms (See picture 4)

      From your video, it appears the start motor is not engaging with a "strong start". Measure the voltage across that brown power resistor when you have the start switch on. There should be "0" volts across this resistor in the start mode. The resistor should be shorted out by the run switch in this mode. When the run switch is "ON" the voltage to the start motor is reduced by one half. It sounds/looks like you are getting this half voltage at the start. Your TG seems to coast well, so it should come up to speed fine when it gets enough torque from the start motor.

      As a test, you could jumper out the resistor in the start mode and see if the TG comes up to speed better. Be careful, as you have 220 VAC at this power panel.

        Juan,
        I'm not clear if you have determined that both run motor windings are good. Measuring red to red should be the same resistance as black to black. In the 117vac motors the two coils are 180 ohms each and 90 ohms in parallel. I'm not familiar with the 230vac motor but I assume both windings still need to be the same. Usually one will open measuring infinate. This will make the motor attempt to run but struggle at best.

            From the sounds of the video, it sounds like the starter motor chatter. To test, Put a jumper across the the brown resistor on the front. If the motor operates as it should, the run switch is bad. Change it... If it does not change, the resistor is bad. I have had good success with this when I have a Hammond with start motor chatter.

My personal setup is a Model A # 2203 with Trek II percussion, 122RV and 2 31h's. One is fitted with two speed motors and the other a Hamptone. Also sporting a working Vibratone 30A # 326.
