  • Finally got a Hammond, with a few problems.

A 1969 H-182, no known history. Lovely little bastard, the 16' drawbars and pedals shake everything in my 600 square foot home.

Now for the problems. Seems to be mostly functional at the moment, but a disturbing problem with the motor is present. At best, it is reluctant to start, requiring a nudge to start spinning. Upon the instruction of the dealer, the organ was allowed to run for several hours. Ended up having it going for about four hours on the first night I had it. Shut it off for a bit, and tried to turn it back on. Nothing happened. Earlier this night I was able to start the organ, again requiring a nudge of the drive shaft to start.

A few nuisances are present, beyond about a dozen spiders that may have died decades ago. Some of the vibrato settings create a lot of noise on their own, and the right treble speaker occasionally produces loud popping noises. A 60hz hum is often present, along with very clear radio broadcasts, an issue with my home's eighty year-old wiring. Massive amounts of key click are present on the treble keys on the upper manual, to the point that some can be louder than the actual tone.

I haven't finished checking all the keys and all the drawbars, but this is what I have so far.

The following drawbars are completely dead:
Upper B 8' drawbar is totally dead, not like that one is ever used.
    Upper A# 16'
    Upper A# 1'

Some drawbars are refusing to play certain keys. I suspect the circuit from a specific tonewheel has broken somewhere, resulting in a dead note.
    Upper B 1 3/5' drawbar does not play b2
    Upper b 1 1/3' drawbar does not play g#1
Upper B 1' drawbar does not play d#1
    Upper A# 5 1/3' drawbar does not play g#4
Upper A# 8' drawbar does not play d#5 or d1
Upper A# 4' drawbar does not play d#4
    Upper A# 2 2/3' drawbar does not play g#3
Upper A# 2' drawbar does not play d#3
    Upper A# 1 3/5' drawbar does not play b2 or g#1

Lower A# 16' drawbar does not play d3
Lower A# 16' drawbar does not play d#6
    Lower A# 5 1/3' drawbar does not play g#4
Lower A# 8' drawbar does not play d#3
Lower A# 8' drawbar does not play d1
Lower A# 4' drawbar does not play D#4
Nothing to the right of lower A# 4' has been tested. Pedals seem to be good.

Update, motor started itself, right as I turned the light on.

Although technically posted in the correct section, I've moved it into the main Hammond section where it will get more views and replies. Andy-Moderator

The drawbars most likely need a good cleaning.

The fact that it did not start up right away indicates there is a lack of lube and there are most likely frozen bearings throughout the TG that will cause tones not to sound. Each set of tonewheels are on a spring clutch so that a set will not cause the whole thing to stop playing...just the tones associated with the stuck tonewheels.

Cleaning all the connectors everywhere in the organ as well as all the tube pins and sockets will fix a majority of your issues.
Cleaning all the switch contacts will clear up more issues.

Hum is worn out power supply capacitors.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.
    In reality, there is.
