A good way to make an educated guess at this is to grab the M series service manual from archive.org, then compare the schematics for the two amps. You want to compare the voltage either immediately before or immediately after the rectifier tube.
If it's close, you should be okay, provided they are physically about the same size.
Plate voltages are higher in the M3. About 25 volts. Also the M3 requires a higher filament current supply due to the extra tubes. It might work but it will be working past it spec.
Which way are you going? Sounds like the M3 PT would work in an M2 from Richard's description. The upward voltage drift of AC mains for the last 3 decades would probably make up most of the missing 25V. :)
