• I have a Hammond XTP that needs help...

I just got this thing and I love it but the tone wheel is sqeaking really bad. It didn't come with a manual and I have no idea where to put the oil. Can someone help please.

    Thanks,

    HiRick,

Welcome to the world of T series owners! You have one of the rarest ones.

    1) get a manual - it will be useful. Try ebay or a Google search.

    2) look at the TWG - you'll see cups on the top. That's where the oil goes. It goes without saying that you should get and use Hammond oil - easily obtainable. Don't use solvents like WD40 - they'll work at first then go gummy and cause problems.

    3) search the site here for threads on this subject and make notes

    4) be PATIENT. If the organ hasn't been oiled for some time it will take a while for the oil to soak down the wicks and get to where it's needed.

    5) while you're waiting, check out and fix anything else that needs doing, and visit www.keyboardpartner.de for some great T series mods. First thing to do is to change the percussion voices to give you proper 2nd and 3rd harmonics, and the little transistor board there will instantly give you proper percussion keying. There are a couple of pix in my gallery.

Thanks Andy. The help is definitely appreciated. How long would you recommend waiting after oiling for the squeaking to stop. We oiled it yesterday and it's still sqeaking horribly. Are we talking a matter of hours? days? weeks? I'm really hesitant to try running it at all with it squeaking like that so I really don't what else if anything works or doesn't. Also, do you have any idea how or if the tone generator locks on the XTB? I've been hearing that this could also cause noise problems so I want to make sure that everything is free to swing where it needs to. I am definitely very interested in the mods. I love to customize my stuff. I know it tends to detract from the value of vintage instruments but I know I'm never going to sell it and I just want it to be something that's special for me. So any other ideas for mods would certainly be appreciated.

      Thanks again,

        Hi Rick

We're talking days, maybe a week or two if it hasn't been oiled in a long time. Occasionally, you'll have to open up the generator to get oil to a specfic wheel, but not often. The T series generator is permanently fixed, no locking down for transport.

The T isn't yet regarded by most as being vintage, but it will get there one day! Go for the mods, but take your time. I've got a few done on mine, but I'm not going to extremes. Carsten Meyer's site has a valve pre-amp stage that I'd like to build, but you can't get the mini 12 volt valves. There's a UK company planning to make a replacement T main amp, using the cast-off amps from leslie 125 cabinets, so I may do that instead.

Thanks again Andy. You're awesome man. One more quick question. I also have an L 100 series. It works great! Just want to make sure of whether or not I need to worry about locking anything on it for transporting as well.

          You're a life saver man!

            Andy,

Just wanted to let you know that the XTP is working great! It sounds awesome. Everything seems to work as it should. The only problem is that the draw bars are kinda scratchy. Any suggestions on how to go about cleaning them up? I've tried playing with them...a lot...and it's gotten a little better but they still need work.

            Thanks for everything,

              DeOxit

Might take a few days before it comes totally quiet. But it will deboogerize them just dandy.
