• Opinions on my first recording on my B3

This track is me on the B3/Leslie 22h, Korg DW8000, Yamaha CP25, Fender 50th ani strat and vocals, multi tracked into Alesis IO/14

This groove gnawed at me for over a year, as a guitar groove, then it inspired me to buy my first Hammond, and learn the keys.

What I had in mind was more of a Hammond Organ Jazz trio sound. Doing the Bassline on the LH then the counter melody on the RH, minimal guitar with just light accents and a soft shoe brushes on a bebob drum kit, but I'm not that brutal. Perhaps one day, but for now I had to compensate the track with other melodies.

I hope it's not to busy. What I had in mind was less cluttered. I just couldn't get that sound on just the B3.

Actually the original idea is at 127bpm, but anything over 112bpm and my fingers started turning into twizzle sticks.

But at that tempo it sounded dragging so I tracked in the other instruments to fill it out and give an illusion of a faster pace.

        TPB,

Organ is a difficult instrument to play well. I know exactly what you are going through because I'm going through it myself! My take on playing the thing is "legato" or all note being "tied together". I try to make sure all my left hand chords run into each other by using finger substitution if neccessary so something is always sounding. This works well for me with the lead parts also with the right hand. I have yet to master choppy parts. They seem to sound ok when I play them but recorded is a whole other story. Using chords on the right hand like blocking some three finger stuff is the key ofC seems to sound ok but man, a Hammond can be brutal. I should have taken piano as a kid instead of drums but drums/giutar where so "cool" you know.

Now at 50 + years this old dog is trying to learn new tricks. My "goal" is to be able to haul on of these rigs to jam night and be able to play the blues in E, A, G and C. If not having all the pentatonic, dorian and mixilodian scales down, at least be able to chord along as back up. I'm trying to play pedals too. Ha, what a hoot! 32 of those suckers on my RT3.

I got into Hammonds just because I love the sound and I love vintage intruments. I'm mechanically and electonically inclined so I found out I could fix them. The playing takes a little longer for me anyway. I just think of what I knew when I dragged home my first M3 a few years ago. Absolutely nothing! I think even though I have a long way to go, I've come pretty far. You too TPB! Keep going.BTW the percussion sound great on that track. What did you use to drawbars and percussion settings?

          LH 808000000

          RH 888500000 C2 3rd perc soft fast

I also dubbed over LH bass on the Yamaha CP 25 A and B waveforms(Fattest Bass I know) over that to give it oomph, Along the track I put an volume envelope on the CP25 track to bring it down when leads and other break down parts so the Hammond bass carried a soft back end for the solos.

The Whistle was bank 48 on my KorgDW8000 it sounds Tomita to me and one of the few usable one that I haven't programmed over.It gave it that retro Roadhouse Psychobilly feel I think.

It'll be one of those tunes I record several interpretations of. One day I maybe I'll pull it off ala Jimmy Smith Jazz trio style.
