  • Tuning a Kimball 770?

    Hey guys,

I recently bought a Kimball Swinger 700-series for cheap, mostly to scratch my itch for a cheesy combo organ that wasn't absurdly expensive. I like the range of sounds I can get from it (besides the abysmal built-in Leslie that sounds like it has no frequencies above about 3kHz).
It just has one problem - it's really out of tune with itself! I assume that, like most organs of this type, it just uses top-octave divide-down circuitry, right? What would cause these tone generators to go out of tune? Are there trim pots on the boards to adjust the pitch individually, or am I dealing with some bad caps or something? I'm not even sure exactly how to open the top to look at the tone generator boards. I didn't find anything like that when I opened the back.

The organ works great besides that (and a scratchy swell pedal which I haven't been bothered to take apart and clean). In a way, it adds to the cheesy character I'm going for, and with vibrato on it's not terribly noticeable. However, it certainly limits what I can do with it (and what keys I can play in without cringing).

    Anyone have any ideas?

Kimball often used a latch to hold the top down. Look on the right hand end of the back near the top for a small metal lever held down by a small screw. It would be in a recess cut into the wood.
Remove the screw then pull out the lever about 1/2 inch. The top should now open.
Inside, possibly on the shelf is the master oscillator board with 12 tuning coils. If not visible from the back you may have to raise the tab panel and upper keyboard both of which are held down by 1/4" hex head screws into the side panels.
You will need a plastic hex tuning tool to adjust them. They are usually sold in sets containing various sizes. Do not use a metal Allen wrench!

Thank you very much tucsondave - That is exactly what I needed to know! And thanks for the reminder not to use a metal allen wrench. Makes perfect sense.

seamaster - I know most people share your sentiment, lol.

        Cheers!
