Does anyone here have a Yamaha FX20? I have a customer who inherited one of these, and she has no owner's manual or any clue about playing it. I checked it out for her when it was brought here and it seemed to be in good working order. Now she tells me that it seems to be in some weird mode where the pedals don't play and the upper and lower keyboards don't sound right when played together. I have no idea what she is talking about, as I am not at all familiar with how this organ works.

    Any help would be appreciated!

I have one ( and it's big brother, the FX-1 ) and could perhaps help her figure things out if RTFM does not work. There are lots of ways to set things on a big Yamaha like that, but that condition is not one that is usual.

Simply turning it Off and then back On is not always a solution to a settings issue, as those organs are supposed to start up with the last setting used.

After I sent her the link to the manual she apparently figured out what was wrong. She is a novice and probably had pushed some buttons that caused unexpected things to happen. When she called, she said that the pedals did not play and the two manuals seemed out of tune with each other. I suspect that she had pressed the one-finger-chord button.

While big "stage" organs like this can do amazing things under the hands and feet of a pro, they can also create some ungodly noise in the wrong hands! Problem is that many folks who inherit one of these, or who run across one in a thrift shop, are probably really wanting a more standard type of organ, more like a Hammond B or C model, or a plain vanilla old-fashioned classical organ. The baffling array of controls and options and features will be nothing but trouble to a player who is wanting to simply play some old Gospel songs like grandma used to play them on the pump organ!

We actually have one sitting in storage. My more adept friends were able to play it; pretty cool! Recently had an interested party in LA who wants to get it out there.(NY here). Working on getting that done.
Can't play an note but love all things "organ" Responsible for 2/10 Wurli pipe organ, Allen 3160(wife's), Allen LL324, Allen GW319EX, ADC4600, many others. E-organ shop to fund free organ lessons for kids.

It's a testament to the quality of Yamaha organs of that era (and indeed even earlier) that so many have survived and generally work as well as they did when they were new.

I had that same problem nearly a year ago when I got my E50. I was sure it had glitches but then I started turning everything off. It was good after that. There must've been lots of little fingers touching things because the organ was at an estate sale.

Update on the FX20! It's going out to LA! My daughter is moving there and will take it there as part of her moving inventory. The new owner is a well known organist - can't divulge his name.

Glad to hear it is going to a good home. While some of the sounds and features are dated, they are really nice instruments. The built in audio system is very powerful for a home organ. Hope the moving Co does not charge extra for taking it along - they are one of the heaviest consoles I have ever moved ! But just like the Stage Models, the FX-20 has steel rollers built in, if needed. They only roll lengthwise though, and do not swivel.
