  • I need Leslie 122 custom finish ideas please.

    Hello again all you experts,

The day has finally come where I have acquired a Leslie 122 with the finish completely destroyed.
Someone sanded the hell out of it and it appears someone was pulling on it by the lower louvers and broke a couple of 1" pieces of wood away.

So at this point I need custom finish ideas as the stock look is not going to happen.
The wood can be repaired, but let's have some fun with the finish!!

Give me all of your ideas/thoughts.
Your dream finish all the way down to your craziest.

Paint, Tolex, Stone covered, L.E.D.S, whatever! Sky is the limit.

Black Leather covered cabinet with studs on the trim was one idea thrown on the table.
(Not my favorite but it gets the ball rolling)

As always, thank you for all your help and advice in advance!!

I will freely give you the idea I had for a guitar job - black on black sunburst. Strip and sand to bare wood, use Minwax black ebony stain, finish with clear lacquer, then shade in with black lacquer. There are youtube videos that show how to use an elevated mask to feather the edges and establish the shape.

I shelved the guitar project because the 50-year old celluloid binding crumbled away, and I'm not up to doing a binding job at this time.

This 122/770 is satin black. Looks great IMO.
There are no upper moldings.....but there is some filler.

I second bedliner and duratex. I love the look and feel of the texture. Not that they do not hide flaws much if at all, so everything needs to be pretty smooth.

Smooth - Bondo plastic fillter for voids less than 3/32". Bondo short-haired fiberglass filler (and a belt sander) for larger voids. That stuff bonds to plywood like the dickens.

Then you sand the heck out of it.

I wish I'd known about this stuff years ago - the recased M3, the Rhodes restoration, my ugly cat-scratched carpet covered studio monitors, and even the new interior panels I just made for the current MG Midget project. Working with Tolex and vinyl upholstery fabric is the worst!

See vehicles with advertising wraps? I've seen a few cool rigs 'wrapped'. Sign shops with new shrink wrap tech can do marvelous work.

My travel cases for Leslies are simple cardboard slip covers lined with Lee Valley workmat fabric for a 'blanket' glued to the inner walls and roof.39"x39" or a square meter if you will for 2.60 CA.
Sets me back about 12 dollars for a 'slip cover' in materials and about an hour to build it. 'Scoring' cardboard at the right depth you can build as good a box as it shipped in! Lotsa gaff tape too....
