  • Leslie 130 ...some issues

So I just got my first Leslie (not counting the internal one in my T-200), a model 130. Powered with a Dr. Fishsticks controller and ART tube preamp.

Of course, there are two major issues with it:

    1. The audio signal from the preamp is very quiet, but there is a super loud hum whenever the amp is powered up (before the Fishsticks is even powered up). I adjusted the pot on the Leslie amp so that it is at maximum volume, but the audio signal still is quiet. Also, the pot seems to cut in and out as it's turned. I may take the amp over to a local amp builder and see if he can troubleshoot it, but I figured I would check here first.

    2. The motors. Originally, the Leslie was stuck on fast. The footswitch engages the slow motor, as in the shaft drops down, but it didn't seem to hit the O ring, since it stays pretty much on fast. I've been working on the nuts to adjust the contact of the shaft to the O ring (as described at http://bentonelectronics.com/servici...leslie-motors/). After several adjustments and no improvement, the situation reversed: the slow speed works VERY slow, and the fast speed does not work at all! At this point, I've decided to stop messing with it, although I wonder if I should adjust the tension on the belt, which I have not tried yet. I think the tension may be on the higher side. I am assuming that either way, the O ring is going to be replaced.

FWIW, I picked the Leslie up on Craigslist. The seller bought it two years ago, said it "worked" when he bought it, and he just never got around to getting it set up so he could play his guitar through it, so it has sat in his garage unused all this time. I had to clean a whole ton of dirt and dust out of the inside of the cabinet, which included the motors. I took the motors out and gave them a cleaning, including disassembling the slow motor. I also oiled both motors.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

7830 lit is the best way to connect to an organ........what signal are you sending to the preamp and Leslie the T or something else? Where are you getting the signal??? Motor should be lubed and serviced, adjustment is tricky, i made a setup to test outside the box....it takes patience

The T is at my band's rehearsal space and the 130 is at home, so they probably won't be getting together anytime soon. I've tried sending a Nord Electro 3, Hohner Pianet L, and an M-101 to the Leslie, all with the same results. What is a 7830 lit?

I think he meant 7830 Kit

kit, bad hands, good intentions......no the Leslie kit would go between the T and the 130 typically, I have put it in a bass amp for a homemade preamp before

No worries. I've adjusted it to the point that I have a good chorale speed, but the fast motor doesn't seem to be working at all. Maybe it's time to disassemble and clean the fast motor?

I completely forgot to update on what happened with the Leslie!

So back in January, I took the amp out of the Leslie and over to a local amp builder/tech to have him recap it. He was able to do that no problem. But what he found when he was working on it was that the wires in the cable were off by 1 position on each end. That was an easy enough fix to do myself, and once it was done, lo and behold, the Leslie got a good signal and the motors switched appropriately! I guess that's the price you pay for building your own cable.

After trying a few different preamps and amps, I've settled on my Ampeg BR-2 bass amp to drive the Leslie. It sounds pretty good, but I don't know how it's going to be able to hold its own onstage (or even in rehearsal) with a band. It's hard to get a good volume out of the Leslie without getting distortion. The situation is the same with any of the amps and preamps that I've tried. Anybody have any experiences with the 130? Is it typically a quiet model Leslie? A friend of mine just got a 125 in his studio and that thing leaves our ears ringing while still sounding pretty clean.
