  • Hauptwerk 4.2 for OSX

    Hi everyone,
So this is a bit of a stretch probably but I don't know where else to turn. A friend of mine has Hauptwerk 4 on OSX but reformatted his computer not realising that you can't get a copy of the program you own from Hauptwerk any more :/ Does anyone know where I'd be able to find a copy? He still has his dongle but after contacting Milan they pretty much said tough luck buy the new one.

I've even checked some of the more nefarious ends of the internet hoping to find something but it seems nothing exists :(

Any help is hugely appreciated thanks :)

Michael, I'm in the same situation, in a way. A donor gave our music department a two manual console with Hauptwerk 4.1 running. I'm now trying to upgrade to 4.2, but with little luck. Its running on a Mac Mini so I'd need the 4.2 MacOs version. I have the dongle for it. so its a perfectly legal version running.

I'm also in the same situation. I have the dongle, but can't download HW4.2 anymore. Could you please help me?

There will be legal copies of the HW 4 software around which can be installed. Anything other than the hopelessly crippled free version will need a licensed dongle from back in the day to play without the chime. There are hacked versions around as well as hacked sample sets that we should avoid like the plague. There are free virtual organ programs and free sample sets but for those wanting the best virtual organ software I'd strongly recommend paying for HW 6 and supporting the handful of people who earn an honest living providing state of the art software. If you know of a web site or person offering a hacked version of Hauptwerk PLEASE report them as it's a game of whack a mole shutting down the thieves.

Yes indeed. For the sake of the world of the organ, don't use hacked or bootleg Hauptwerk or sample sets. The people who have devoted immense amounts of time to producing this software deserve to have their copyrights respected and to be compensated for their work, which greatly benefits not only those who love the organ, but the entire musical world, churches everywhere, and so many more.

That said, anyone who possesses an authentic "dongle" from HW 4.2 has every right to use it until such time as he or she decides to upgrade to the latest version. And the crippled "free" version of 4.2 that could be downloaded from Milan until a year or so ago is in fact exactly the same as the full version, as far as the code. It "chimes" periodically only because a dongle isn't attached to the computer running it. I can tell you from my own recent experience (someone gifted me a 4.2 dongle which he no longer needed), all you have to do to transform the "free" HW4.2 to the full version is to plug in the dongle (and register your setup with Milan, a simple process, though I don't recall exactly how it's done).

Somewhere there is in fact a website still offering the old free 4.2 software, though it of course isn't Milan. But it's the LICENSE (aka the "dongle") that you have to pay for, not the code. And the license agreement clearly states that the original purchaser is free to sell or give the dongle/license to another person. It is presumably valid forever, as long as a person owning it chooses to use it.

So it would seem perfectly kosher to download the code from anywhere as long as you use it only according to the terms of the license, as spelled out when you install it. You are perfectly free to run the basic version with limited polyphony and some features disabled, even without a license or dongle, but if you have a dongle, you can access all the features, and be perfectly legal in doing so.
