• Looking for some new Music to Play

    Hello all,

I am looking for some Organ literature to play. I am a Music Ed. Major concentrating in Voice and Piano at School. I love playing Organ, but lately I am so busy at school that I do not have time to prepare much Organ Music. I love the Bach's Prelude and Fugue book, but I don't have time to iron out a lot of the details in works like that right now.

I know it sounds lazy, but sometimes I want to just sit down and play, sight-read, and enjoy myself listening to the Organ. I'm sure some, if not all of you may have been there at one point in time. At this point in time when I get the rare chance to head somewhere and play Organ, I have a small amount of time. Most of my other time is spent studying, doing homework, working, or in practice room...

So I am looking for some new Music to play that won't take much time to prepare, something that would be easy to sight read and play while enjoying myself. Any suggestions?

    Thanks guys!

How about starting with a four-part hymnal and playing the bass with your feet and the other three voices with your hands?

When you say the Bach Prelude & Fugue book, which one do you mean?

The Eight Little Preludes & Fugues are quite easy and fun to play.

I have several good compilations by E. Power Biggs - I'm not sure if these are still available but the onesI like best arethe "Treasury of Early Organ Music" and "The Biggs Book of Organ Music". There is also "A Treasury of Shorter Organ Classics" and the "Festival Anthology for Organ".

For service music you might enjoy the hymn arrangements by Dale Wood. These can be whimsical and fun.

You might enjoy French baroque organ works; these are not always easy but there are always easier movements contained withineach set of pieces. A good start wouldbethe two organ masses by François Couperin; theyare likely to be found for free on IMSLP or the Werner Icking Music Archive.

If you like works for manuals alone (or perhaps with an ad lib pedal part) you should look at César Franck's L'Organiste. There are two sets- the one marked "Harmonium" has an ad lib pedal part; the other set has a pedal part written in.Typical ofFranck, the music is not always easy! Butit is worth learning.

Here'sthe Werner Icking page- you'll find PDF files and MIDI files too: Franck on Icking Music Archive.

That is just a drop in the bucket... if you start looking around that music archive you'llbe able to previewa lot of interesting music.

The Biggs compilations show up with reasonable frequency on eBay. I picked mine up there about a year ago.

Not too time-consuming to learn and quite enjoyable.

          Soubasse32,

Thank you for the reminder about Franck's L'Organiste. My congregations love Franck, so I played a few of the works yesterday.

By the way, please check your pm.

You may already be familiar with this site, but if not, check out:

Lots of relatively easy, searchable content can be found there. A lot of the organ pieces by Handel are a pleasure to hear and easy to play; many are just a couple of pages in length. Some of the pieces also have midi, mp3, or video demos.
